Romanization of Korean |
|
Many languages and characters are used in this world.
The Roman Letters are most widely used among them. The
Romanization for the names of Korean region or Korean
person and other related terms to Korea has been formed
by Western people since 19th century. Among them, McCune-Reischauer
system, made collaboratively by two Americans McCune and
Reischauer, has been widely used in overseas since published
in 1939. But, it is hard for Korean to understand and
utilize because the system is based on Western cognition.
Because of this, Ministry of Education made an easy and
convenient Romanization, but before the Asian Game and
the Olympic Game, the McCune and Reischauer system was
decided to use again.
However, the McCune and Reischauer system did not comply
with the Korean language's specific features, and it also
did not fit to the information-oriented society because
of its detailed special marks. It was so difficult to
use that many people did not follow the rules and it brought
out a serious confusion in the Romanization.
In July of 2000, Ministry of Culture
& Tourism notified New Romanization
that complies with the Korean language's specific features
and the needs of the information-oriented society. In
the new Romanization, Korean pronunciation should be translated
into Roman letters and the important difference between
'ㄱ,ㄷ,ㅂ,ㅈ' and 'ㅋ,ㅌ,ㅍ,ㅊ' should be expressed in 'g, d,
b, j' and 'k, t, p, ch'. The letters for vowel 'ㅣ' and
'ㅡ' are used 'eo' and 'eu' instead of the previously used
letters 'u' and 'u' to eliminate the special marks.
Now, it is our job to spread the new Romanization to the
whole nation and overseas to get the unified Korean Romanization
world wide. |
